Accountants play a vital role in the daily operations of Brazilian companies. These professionals are responsible for managing activities related to finance, economics, and assets. They must stay constantly up to date with legal changes and ensure compliance with tax and regulatory obligations. Their work keeps businesses in good standing with oversight agencies, which makes their role a highly responsible one.
Beyond compliance, accountants also recommend strategies to address financial challenges and support the development and financial health of a business.
In recognition of these professionals — who contribute so much to the country’s economic growth — we pay tribute to them today, Thursday, September 22. To celebrate their importance, here are some facts and curiosities about this ever-evolving profession.
The Origin of Accountant’s Day
In 1945, then-President Getúlio Vargas signed Decree-Law No. 7,988, which created Brazil’s first undergraduate Accounting program at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). This moment also marked the establishment of Accountant’s Day, making it a historical milestone for the profession.
Before that, there were only two technical-level programs — one for Accounting Technicians and one for Accountants — but neither held the status of higher education.
Accountant or “Contabilista”?
Few people know there’s a difference between these two terms.
An Accountant is someone who holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Since June 2015, only graduates of this program can obtain professional registration with the Regional Accounting Council (CRC). This credential enables them to work in corporate management, controlling, insurance, auditing, expert analysis, and other areas.
A “Contabilista”, on the other hand, is someone with a high school or technical-level education in Accounting.
It’s worth noting that anyone who completed a technical accounting program before June 1, 2015 can register with the CRC and continue to practice. After this date, only accountants with a bachelor’s degree are eligible for registration.
Does Every Company Need an Accountant?
To stay compliant with daily, monthly, and annual obligations (and there are many), companies must rely on a qualified Accountant. In some cases, it is legally required for this professional to sign books and documents to certify the company’s compliance.
The only professional authorized to prepare and sign certain documents is a licensed accountant registered with the Regional Accounting Council (CRC).
Celebratory Dates
Accountants don’t just celebrate on September 22. The profession is honored on several other important dates:
-
January 14 – Accounting Businessperson’s Day
-
April 25 – Contabilista’s Day
Each of these dates recognizes different aspects of the profession’s evolution and contributions.
Advisory Accounting
Throughout history, accounting has evolved through various phases, giving rise to different professional profiles within the field. It’s important to understand that the services an accountant provides depend on their level of expertise and area of operation.
Advisory Accounting is a more personalized approach. In this model, the accountant works closely with the client, taking on a strategic, analytical, and structured role. They support decision-making and help businesses interpret their data clearly, enabling more accurate planning for sustainable growth.
Rather than merely handling compliance, advisory accountants provide strategic guidance, helping clients follow the right directives and identify opportunities to unlock their business potential.
